What is a MERV Rating?

Minimum Efficiency Reporting Values, or MERVs, is the primary rating system for an HVAC filter’s ability to capture particles between 0.3 and 10 microns (µm). The higher the rating number, means a larger percentage of particles in the air can be treated. MERV ratings go from MERV 1 all the way up to 20.

 

Here are the different levels of MERV ratings and what they address concerning your indoor air:

MERV 12 More than 90% of the reachable air is filtered to capture 3-10 µm particles,
80-90% for 1-3 µm particles, less than 20% for .3-1 µm particles
MERV 13 More than 90% of the reachable air is filtered to capture 1-10 µm particles,
less than 75% for .3-1 µm particles
